Liquor Law

The Liquor Industry in Connecticut is highly regulated by the Liquor Control Division of the Department of Consumer Protection.  This is the agency charged with the responsibility of enforcing the Connecticut Liquor Control Act.  You are regulated by the Liquor Control Division if your business is a package store, a restaurant holding a liquor license, a grocery store with a beer permit, a wine distributor,  manufacturer or wholesaler, or a caterer or private club that serves liquor. This Division is charged with the authority to issue permits, oversee compliance with the State liquor laws, conduct investigations into the proper operation of permit premises, and hold disciplinary and compliance hearings.

In addition to issuing your permit, the Liquor Control Division is empowered to revoke it, issue fines, or order your business to close for a certain time period if it determines that you, as a permittee, have not complied with the State laws regarding the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages.

The Department of Consumer Protection website provides a wealth of information related to liquor control procedures, regulations, and frequently asked questions.  However, proceedings before the Liquor Control Commission involve a highly specialized area of law that can have significant implications for your business.
